Year of the Dog

The one who stays after the interesting part is over

Dog is 戌, the storehouse of autumn — the branch that keeps what the sorting season judged worth keeping. Korean saju reads the sign as the twelve's most reliable holder of a position, and that is not the same as being agreeable. Dogs are frequently difficult. What makes them Dogs is that the difficulty is in service of something they decided mattered, usually years ago, and usually about a person rather than an idea.

At work

You are the person who asks who gets hurt if this fails, and you ask it early, in the meeting where everyone was enjoying themselves. It does not make you popular and it has almost certainly saved your employer real money. Where Dogs get stuck is in the follow-through of that instinct: having identified the flaw, you tend to appoint yourself the one who guards against it, and three years later you are carrying four responsibilities that were never assigned to you and that nobody can now take back. Guarding is a role you have to be given, not one you can take.

With people

Your loyalty is unusually literal — you will still be checking in on someone eighteen months after everyone else has drifted, and you do not experience that as effort. The other side of it is that you judge, and the judgements are slow to form and very slow to revise. Somebody who let you down in 2019 is still, at some level, the person who let you down, and you will not always tell them what changed or what would change it back. Naming the terms out loud is the thing Dogs skip most reliably.

Dog compatibility

Easiest fits

Tiger and Horse complete your fire triad, and the arrangement has a real shape to it — they go first and you make sure there is still something standing afterward, which suits all three of you. Rabbit is the six-harmony pair and the gentler match: Rabbit smooths what you have just said bluntly, and Dogs who take that as help rather than as dilution get a great deal out of it.

Hardest fits

Dragon sits opposite you and asks for belief before evidence, which is the one thing you will not extend; the clash is honest and both of you are behaving reasonably by your own lights. Rooster is the harm relation — you should agree, since you both care about standards, but Rooster judges the result and you judge the intention behind it. And Ox and Goat form the punishment group with you: three signs each privately certain they are the fair one in the room, which is exactly as workable as it sounds.

Where the strength turns over

The loyalty flips when it becomes a ledger. You keep an accurate internal record of what you have given and what came back, you do not show it to anyone, and one day the balance tips and you leave without warning. From outside it looks sudden. From inside it was years of accounting nobody was invited to see.

How Korean saju reads this branch

Dog is 戌 — a storehouse branch, and the storehouses are the crowded positions in Korean saju. Inside 戌 sit Metal, Fire and Earth: the standard that autumn set, the warmth left over from summer, and the ground keeping both. The Fire is the piece English-language zodiac write-ups almost always miss, because it does not fit the steady-and-faithful summary. It is where the temper comes from, and the sudden immovability, and the fact that a Dog defending someone is a genuinely formidable thing rather than a merely reliable one. Korean saju also puts 戌 in a punishment group with Ox and Goat — three storehouses, three keepers, each holding a different season's remains and none of them willing to be the one who lets go first.

Are you actually this sign?

Check the boundary before you take any of this personally. Korean saju begins the year at ipchun (立春), around February 4, rather than at Lunar New Year or January 1, so anyone born in January or the first days of February belongs to the previous year's animal here. A January-born Dog by the usual English calculators is a Rooster in this system. Rooster and Dog are the harm pair and read very differently, which makes this a bad one to guess at.

One thing to carry

Say the terms out loud while you still like the person. What you would need, what would end it, what you have already been carrying. The silent ledger is the only thing about this sign that reliably ends well-built relationships.
